‘Mt. Jade is in Metamorphoses’ was developed as a collaboration between lololol, Shin Hanagata and Wang Yu-Jun.
Commissioned by Taipei Performing Arts Center in collaboration with Kyoto Art Center, 2023.
In 2022-2023, artist duo lololol and Shin Hanagata began an exchange of dialogue and experimentation with mutual interest in bodily evolution and ecological dynamics between humans, machines, and nature. In 2023, they collaborated on the performance ‘Mt. Jade is in Metamorphoses’, which was presented at the rooftop garden of the Taipei Performing Arts Center. The work ‘Mt. Jade is in Metamorphoses: Nonlinear’ featured in this exhibition is a video installation derived from the performance.
In the video, a person/tree moves slowly, searching for survival resources within an artificial landscape. The image of this symbiotic being is overlaid with visions of historical plant specimens from the Japanese colonial period. The intertwining narrative of past and future reimagines how the energy of our land infuses into memories of tomorrow.
