Climbing stairs is a classic milestone to achieve in many areas— from early behavioral development, computer science, and oftentimes, a common metaphor used for cultivating mind and body aspirations.

To solve the problem from a computer science point of view, the art of mechanical recursion comes into play. Whether you are a robot, cat, or human, the past, present, and future ways of ascending a staircase are all governed by patterns the Fibonacci numbers.

That is only if we assume a linear causality with preset behavioral rules. In CultivatingSteps, we seek to explore different nonlinear ways of taking a staircase, the notion of recursivity, and wider cultural and material contingencies associated with cultivating steps.
